Mary Leah Jacobson Auvil

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” ~ Psalm 116:15
Mary Leah Jacobson Auvil, 64, of Simpsonville, passed unexpectedly from this world to be with the Lord in the early afternoon of Tuesday, July 21, 2020. She was a precious and steadfast Christian woman who became the epitome of the Proverbs 31 wife, mother and servant of Almighty God.

Mary was born November 3, 1955 to Joel J. Jacobson and Mary Louise (Loxterman) Jacobson in Painesville, Ohio, where she also attended Thomas W. Harvey High school and graduated across town at Riverside High School in 1974 where she met Glenn C. Auvil, who became her best friend, the love of her life and husband of over 41 years and the father of the four wonderful children that they raised. Mary also earned an Associates Degree in Science at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio.

She and her family started a new chapter in life in 1998 when they left snowy northeastern Ohio, relocating to sunny Simpsonville, South Carolina.

Her interests were diverse and many, as she brought excellence to everything that she did. An outstanding homemaker, Mary was extremely creative and industrious, her culinary exploits were legendary labors of love, creating large and fantastic meal events for her family on most Sundays and Holidays; she was wonderful at sewing, crocheting, quilting, arts, crafts and decorative painting of every kind; she was a formidable Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and yet also a skilled Ballroom and Rhythm dancer, being just as comfortable gardening in her blue jeans as she was in ballroom attire on the dance floor. Yet, Mary viewed her many accomplishments with great modesty.

Mary’s greatest achievements were the four children she raised to be good, fit and capable people, and caring for the ensuing grandchildren that she adored; also, accepting and understanding people for who they are, always looking for practical ways to love them and meet the needs others might not see, with humility and often without words. She found great joy in the success and happiness of her family and for every person and creature that she helped.

Mary is survived by her husband, Glenn C. Auvil, whom she married in Painesville on May 21, 1979; four awesome children, sons Daniel Glenn (Laura) Auvil and Dr. Andrew Mark (Christina) Auvil; daughters Elisabeth Janine (Beau) Givens and Joy Anne (Jeff) Schmauch; eight grandchildren, John, Abigail and Margaret Auvil; Hudson, Caroline and Bryar Givens; and Lillian and Jacob Schmauch, all living in the Simpsonville – Greenville area. Brothers Jon (Joan) Jacobson of Painesville, Nels Jacobson of Wetumpka, Alabama ; and Blaise(Donna) Jacobson of Cross, South Carolina, and a sister, Clare (Keith) Barstow of Painesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Glenn Jacobson, Joel C. Jacobson and sister Veda Louise Jacobson.

A Graveside Service celebrating Mary’s life and homegoing will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM in Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn, South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, Mary would have preferred that you invest in local charities that reach out to bring relief to local needs, such as Meals on Wheels, Miracle Hill or the Salvation Army, or any random acts of kindness.

    Dear Glen,
I just saw. I can’t tell you sorry I am. Mary was someone who always put a smile on my face, and uplifted those around her. And what wonderful things she created. It was my honor to know her and to be a fellow “maker.” She’ll be missed.

Craig, this is your cousin marilyn I often thought about all the fun times I had visiting in painesville. Thought about the family often. I am so sorry for your loss of your lovely wife. I am sorry we never met. The tribute that was written about her makes me sad that she will no longer brighten and help this world. You all will be reunited in heaven. Hug your children and tell them how sorry I am for their loss

I cant begin to say how much my friend Mary is going to be missed. Glen I know how much you and Mary loved each other, because I could see it and she would tell me how you brought her flowers and I thought that was so sweet. She was precious to all of us, but to me she was a true friend and I will surely miss her. I KNOW God has her in his arms!

    Glenn & family,

I’m very sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. I worked with Glenn for many years and have always heard what a great wife, mother and grandmother she was. She loved to cook and bake as well and sent goodies to us by Glenn on many occasions. He would always tell us she dressed him and he sure looked forward to their dance nights. May you both dance again one day. Until then, prayers for your family to gain some comfort in knowing she is only away in a better place. Cherish each other and every great moment & memory together. Rest peacefully Mary.

    With sympathy,
    Dawn Hudson
