Dr. James “Jim” F. Richardson

Dr. “Jim” Richardson, 86, of Simpsonville, husband of Gail Griffin Richardson, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, February 17, 2022.

Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Lawrence Rollins & Azile Greene Richardson. Dr. Richardson was a life-long member of Simpsonville First Baptist Church. He served our country in the U.S. Army. Dr. Jim loved to read, his vegetable garden, bird hunting, his Furman Paladins, and all kinds of history. He was a kind, gracious, gentleman with a servant’s heart and a sweet, dry sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Angie R. Saunders, and Cindy R. Osborne and her husband, Tim; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Sherbert and her husband, Dustin, and William Trey Saunders; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, L.R. Richardson, Jr. and his wife, Betty.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 11:00 am in Greenville Memorial Gardens with Pastor Randy Kirby and Pastor Rob White of First Baptist Church Simpsonville officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: Animal Care Services, 328 Furman Hall Rd., Greenville, SC 29609.

Jim was a big part of our family. He lived a few houses above us in Charlotte, so he was there through my high school years. In return, I was the on call babysitter. The memories are so sweet! Jim was not only a wonderful doctor, but also a friend to all! Not a time we went through a loss that he was always the first there. I could go on and on, but still not say all that is in my heart. He served the folks of Simpsonville well! Rest In Peace and know you were loved and will always be in our hearts!

All things must pass, but Dr. Jim and Dr. Rollins were a part of my life in Simpsonville from my early childhood till Jim’s retirement.
My Dad, Grady Smith, was friends with both Rollins and Jim.
My deepest condolences to the family, and hope that grief will be tempered with memories of a life well and truly lived.

When Keith and I first came to Simpsonville, Jim and his family were our first neighbors and soon to be friends. Angie became our babysitter and loved by us all. Jim quickly became our family doctor and he treated and cared for us, as his family. We later learned other patients felt the same. We loved this family and loved Dr. Jim and he kept us healthy for so many years. Our thoughts and prayers for Gail, Angie, Cindy and families. Our love and God’s Peace. Becky

As a child, my parents would take me to see Dr. Jim or Dr. Rollins when I was sick. So as a child, I thought their last names were Jim and Rollins. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I discovered that was not true, their last name was Richardson, and they were FAMILY. Jim remained my physician until he retired many years later. He will be greatly missed!

Dr Jim was a true southern gentleman FP doctor. I moved to Greenville 33 years ago and worked at Hillcrest ER. I would call Dr Jim about his patients in the ER at all hours -day or night. . He always knew the patient’s medical problems, parents, spouses, etc…. all details about the patient by memory. He was always gracious, which was refreshing. He would say ” have them come to my office tomorrow at 8 am and i’ll see them”, not have them call in the am for an appt. sometime in the future. I had full respect for his physician skills and his impressive work ethic and fantastic personality. He invited me to his lovely house for a Christmas party. He was a role model for how medicine used to be. I will miss him and his generations class & style.

Dear Angie and Cindy, My brother, David, just called to tell me about your father having passed away last month. I was so sorry to hear, and had I known, would have offered my condolences much sooner. God’s peace and comfort to you and your families. I I have pleasant memories of you two, your cousins-Margie and Steve, and of our fathers and your uncle Rollins practicing medicine at 304 S Main St.

    Deepest sympathy,
    Alison Bannen Whatley

  • Many pleasant recollections of both Dr. Jim and Dr. Rollins, who were my doctors when I was young. My favorite memory of Dr. Jim was at Mrs. Betty Richardson’s graveside service. I spoke with Dr. Jim and reminded him of a comment he made when treating me as a college student. I had stated that he looked the same as when he treated me as a child, to which he wryly responded: “D___, boy! I think I’d better check your eyes, too!”

“Perpetual light shine upon him, O Lord. May he and the souls of all thy saints rest in peace.” +
