Charlene Hopper Kovacs

Charlene H. Kovacs, 69, of Simpsonville, widow of Gerald Joseph Kovacs, left her earthly home to go to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

Born in 1948 in Russellville, KY, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. Hopper and the late Effie Burchett Hopper. She was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville. She lived most of her adult life in Michigan. She relocated to Simpsonville, SC in 2000 when her husband, Jerry, retired.

Charlene had no birth children but had many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews that she treated as if they were her own children. Charlene took “her children” on vacations to Florida, California, Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame, Detroit Tigers baseball games, Red Wing hockey games, Disney on Ice events, and would do about any activity just to be together with them. Char attended countless school functions from kindergarten through high-school and college graduations. She worked tirelessly to be involved with the entire family making each one of us feel special. Char was always eager to participate in any nieces or nephews school fundraising event and would buy all the candy, wrapping paper, cookies, raffle tickets, etc. that was asked of her.

From September to March each year Charlene had 120-150 “Good News Club” children as she was the club coordinator at Greenbrier Elementary School. She knew most of the children’s names and they all knew her as “Miss Char.” Her desire was that the children would learn of the God that she loved and served.

Char loved to travel and was the official family travel agent who meticulously coordinated travel plans and details. She loved her family unconditionally and never hesitated to do anything for them. She was a loving sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Kovacs is survived by two brothers, Charles (Jean) Hopper and Robert (Donna) Hopper; and one sister, Nita (Tom) Davidson.

In addition to her husband, Jerry, she was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Hopper.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Graziano officiating.

The family will receive friends starting at 11:00 AM prior to the service.

Interment will be on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 3:00 PM in MJ “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Drive, Anderson, SC, 29621.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: “Good News Club” sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church.
