BILLY MAC HARVEY

Billy Mac Harvey, 85, of Greenville, peacefully lost his battle with cancer July 17, 2021. He was born in 1936 in Pelzer, SC, to the late Theo William Harvey and Clara Belle Whitmire Harvey. He was predeceased by his stepmother Mattie Williamson Harvey, sisters Ellen Harvey League and Sue Harvey Hester, as well as his brother, Ted Harvey. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Laurel T. Harvey, as well as his sister Carolyn Harvey Smith, his two sons Neal Harvey (Meladie) and Jeff Harvey (Becky), his daughter Carol Greer (Paul), and 2 stepdaughters Janice Horne (Rick), and Karen Turpin (Jack). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

A veteran of 66 years in the fire sprinkler industry, he was the Manager of Fabrication Services with Daniel Construction Company before eventually founding Harvey and Associates, Inc. in 1988. He served on code committees, such as the NFPA, helping to write fire codes that will be used for generations to come. He was a contributing author of articles for trade magazines. As a result of these articles, he received calls from all over the world seeking his vast knowledge. He was a teacher and mentor to countless individuals in the fire protection industry, and he always cared deeply for his associates and employees.

He had many passions including supporting the Clemson Tigers through IPTAY for over forty years and performing the Upright Bass Fiddle in a Bluegrass band, as well as attending over hundreds of Bluegrass festivals. In the past, Bill and Laurel organized bluegrass bands to perform for the City of Fountain Inn Parks and Recreation.  Automobile racing was also dear to his heart.

Mr. Harvey cherished his family and extended family very much. They will always remember his gentle spirit and unmatched love for his wife.

The family would like to show their thanks and gratitude for Quincy Mansell and Denise Sullivan, as well as Hospice and Palliative Care Palmetto Region, especially Laurie Harvey, for their loving care and support in nurturing their father/grandfather.

A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 3:30 pm in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Howard officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 2:00 pm.

Entombment will be private for the family in the Cannon-Byrd Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to: Hospice & Palliative Care Palmetto Region, 1057 Red Ventures Dr, Suite 150, Fort Mill, SC 29707; (P) (833) 772-0556.

Laurel, Neal, Jeff, Carol, Janice, Karen, Carolyn and all the grand and great grandchildren, I am taking the liberty to extend my deepest sympathy in the passing of one great man Mr. Bill Harvey. I will list in this note the names of those who I remember working in what we called the ole pipe shop later to be named Fabrication Services. The work was hard but pleasurable and profitable during those years with Daniel Construction Company and Fab Services. Mr. Harvey was always one of us even though he was the Boss. I will never forget his kindness and his knowledge of the construction and pipe industry and his mentor ship to so many who worked with him. We always felt that we worked with him and not for him and that makes a big difference. Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.
These are the names of those who I remember from our days at Fab. Services, there were hundreds more throughout the industry who were associated with Bill, Junior Fowler (d), Alton Fowler, Larry Fowler, Eugene (Bubber) Fowler (d) , Claude Fowler (d) , Billie Vaughn, Ted Fowler, Lewis Elliott, Ralph Bryant (d), David Butler (d), Thomas Butler (d), Dave Howie (d), Ralph Whitworth, Walt Bramlett, Morris Payne (d), Marvin Bridges, Jerry Scott (d) and myself Wilton Fowler, I know I speak for all these who knew and worked with Bill in saying he was a giant in the Fire Protection Industry. May he rest in peace.

I was on NFPA 20 with Bill . My first meeting, I knew I had found someone who was very knowledgable and was willing to help a fellow. Bill will be missed by a large number of people who loved him and enjoyed being around him. I always appreciated how he would get right down to the matter.
    Praying for Bills family!!

  • Laurel, for so many bluegrass festival years I thought his first name was Harvey! Years later I learned it was Bill. Such good memories at bluegrass festivals and picking at the 5th String in a learning group. Will treasure always. Love you and loved me some Harvey!! Kindest, sweetest, and so smart yet humble. He will be so missed. Sherri Sheriff

I have fond memories of Bill, he was always nice to me.
I can tell you I always looked forward to the days of going to a bluegrass festival running into Bill & Laurel, hanging out, fellowship, and play music with them. Bill was a scholar and a Gentlemen and I’ll never forget the times I shared with him. I was honored to play his 80th birthday celebration. Rest Easy my friend
