Jose J. Mercado

José Juan Mercado, 76, entered into eternal rest at Brookstone Terrace Assisted Living on October 11, 2025.

He was born on May 24, 1949, in Humacao, Puerto Rico and moved to New York City, at the age of four, where he was lovingly raised by his grandmother. He fluently spoke both Spanish and English.

During his school years, he excelled at many different sports including football, baseball, and track. He continued playing softball and basketball well into adulthood.

He served his country for two terms in the National Guard.

José met his love of 52 years, Susan, in college, and together they raised their three girls in New Jersey and Virginia where he taught elementary and middle school for 33 years.

During the summers, he enjoyed landscaping and tree work and was known for doing every job with excellence. He loved to help others, was friendly and approachable, and always had a corny joke or smile to share.

He moved to South Carolina after retirement and gained four grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

José accepted Jesus as his Savior during college and spent his life sharing that hope with others. His love for the Lord took him across the world where he joyfully told others about Jesus. His greatest hope would be that you, too, would know Him as your Savior.

José is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters Kristin Dunker (husband Jesse), Emily Woods (husband Jonathan, children Nora, Eloise, Camille, and Theo), and Amy Mercado.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Brookstone Terrace in Simpsonville.
