Henry Newton Hammond Jr

Henry (Bud) Hammond, 94, of Simpsonville went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 19, 2024.  Bud is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kirby Hammond; sons Barry (Beau) Hammond (Jane) and Wayne Hammond; as well as one daughter, Sherie Hammond Smith (Scott). Other survivors include three granddaughters; Amanda Faye Landers, Jo-Ana Helen Hammond and Chelsea McDaniel (Alan); two great grandchildren, Jayden Landers and Jackson Henry Atkinson; a brother James Hammond (Irene); stepdaughter, Betty Jo Burns; stepson, Danny Thompkins; and step grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin and Joey Thompkins.

Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Faye Helen Chandler Hammond and three sisters; Cozette Sherfield, Sarah Cooley and Mildred Faber.

Known as a hard worker, Bud delivered groceries on his bike as a young boy and lit the school furnace early every morning.  After working on the Savannah River Project as a heliarc welder, Bud worked at the Simpsonville Lumber Company before opening Hammond Plumbing Company.  In the mid-eighties Bud became a Plumbing Inspector for Greenville County before being promoted to Codes Administrator. He also taught a Master Plumbing License Class at Greenville Technical College.

Bud was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. He looked forward to annual family fishing trips, raising world class tomatoes and smoking hogs.  Bud’s years of honing his barbeque recipes became the foundation for Henry’s Barbeque, a well-known staple in the Upstate.

Bud’s gentle smile and wise counsel left his mark on the community and his friends and family.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 1:30 pm in the Heritage Chapel of Cannon-Byrd Funeral Home in Simpsonville officiated by Pastor Randy Harling. Interment will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

  • Great Guy and teacher. He did the plumbing in Sherie’s and my house. Lots of WIsdom! Helped me with many things! Including support when i was in a stuck terrible mood setting stone on the outside of our cider block foundation — among many other things! He will be Missed!

Wayne and Beau and Sherrie and family – I loved Mr Hammond!
Bud was such a great guy, loved his spirit, his smile…..his can-do attitude…..always felt like he had a servants heart……always willing to help when called upon.

Bud had this peace about him that I always admired, so humble…so gifted!

Praying for y’all. What a champion of a man y’all had as a dad.

Thankful that I knew Bud Hammond!

Love and prayers to your family.
