Doris A. Thompson
Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Doris A. Thompson, 80, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 56 years, Paul. She is survived by her children, Marsha Thompson Basanda, Mark Alan Thompson (Judy), Rebecca S. Poole, and Julie Thompson-Adolf (Peter).
Doris was a caring grandmother to Becky Basanda, Chris Fortenberry (Ashley), Vicki Manley (Michael), Lauren Basanda, Tyler Thompson, Kristen Adolf, Lexie Poole, and Michael Adolf. Great-grandchildren include Colin and Grayson Manley, Lily and Jack Fortenberry. She was predeceased by her parents, Ada and Charles Smith, and her three sisters, Gladys Hinds, Ruth Redkey, and Margaret Blanton.
Doris was a voracious reader and followed current events avidly. She was very involved with her children’s schools and volunteered with the PTA, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations. She was a great friend to all, with an infectious laugh and sharp wit. Doris enjoyed gardening, birds, walks along the beach, and dancing with her husband, Paul. She was everyone’s “adopted mother,” from Deer Park, Ohio to Munster, Indiana. Alzheimer’s Disease stole her memory but not her personality.
A memorial service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held on Thursday, September 2, 7 p.m. at the chapel at Cannon Funeral Home, 1150 North Main Street, Fountain Inn, SC.
Many thanks to her caregivers at The Springs, Simpsonville, and NHC, Mauldin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Upstate Chapter, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5300, Greenville, SC 29601.
