Mildred “Mil” B. Givens
Mildred “Mil” B. Givens, 86, a resident of Fountain Inn, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at her home. She was born March 10th, 1927 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina the daughter of the late Raymond and Louise Bulluck. She was married to O.B. Givens, Jr. on September 20th, 1947. He preceded her in death January 4, 1990. They were married for 43 blessed years.
Mildred graduated from West Edgecombe High School at the age of sixteen. She then attended Peace College, where she played on the women’s basketball team, followed by attendance at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where she graduated in June 1947 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology and Social Studies at the age of 20. It was while she was a junior at UNC that Mildred met the love of her life, Osmine Boyne Givens, Jr., who had just gotten out of the Navy. They were married less than two years later in Rocky Mount, NC. After her marriage to O.B., the couple moved to Fountain Inn where Mildred spent thirty years in Greenville County Schools as a Social Studies and Math teacher.
Mildred was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was an active member of Fountain Inn First Baptist Church where she was a member of both the Homebound and Bereavement Committees as well as the Bertha Smith Group. She was a member of the choir, assisted in the media center and traveled with the senior adult group. She also dedicated forty years of service as a Sunday School teacher to 4th and 5th-grade students. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Fountain Inn Music Club and Bridge Club. She was an avid gardener and was well known for her homemade bread and strawberry preserves but much more so for her love for the Tarheels. She never missed watching a UNC Basketball game if she could help it.
Mildred is survived by her children – Ozzie Givens (Jeanie) of Fountain Inn, Louanne Stewart (Eddie) of Florence, Lynne Simms (Dave) of Simpsonville, five grandchildren – Beau Givens, Ward Givens (Rasha), Rachel Givens all of Fountain Inn; Wes Stewart (Jessica) of Lancaster SC; Jessie Barta (Daniel) of Greenville, SC; and five great-grandchildren – Hudson Givens, Caroline Givens, Maddox Givens, Gwen Givens, and Allie Barta.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Anne Bulluck Gilliam and her brother Paul Raymond Bulluck, Jr.
The family will receive friends during visitation on Tuesday, June 18th from 6:00 – 8:30 pm at Heritage Funeral Home, 313 N. Main St., Simpsonville. Funeral services for Mrs. Givens will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 19th at Fountain Inn First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at CANNON Memorial Park.
