Carol Elton Whatley
Carol E. Whatley, age 82, died Saturday, January 19th in Greenville after a lengthy illness. He was an Army veteran and of the Anglican Catholic faith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Leith, and his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Brandi and Jason Krug of Phoenixville, PA.
Born in Greenwood on July 16, 1930, Carol was the only son of George and Olena Whatley. He graduated from Wofford College, where he was a letterman on the golf team and a member of Kappa Sigma. Carol also went to LSU, where he received a post-graduate banking degree.
Carol had a life-long career in banking, serving in Greenwood, Aiken, Anderson, and Simpsonville. He retired as the Simpsonville city executive of NationsBank in 1992.
Carol believed in giving back to his community, serving as President of the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Fox Run Golf Association. He was also an active board member of the YMCA and Boy Scouts of America.
As an original member of the Fox Run 8-some golf group, Carol enjoyed golfing and going on golf trips. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and friends to many places all over the world, his favorite being an African safari with his wife and daughter.
Carol will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community. He epitomized the true Southern gentleman, being kind and helpful to everyone.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home in Simpsonville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be donated to the charity of one’s choice.
