Helen Bridges “Polly” Smith

Helen Bridges (Polly) Smith, age 91, widow of William John (Bill) Smith, died January 4, 2018 in the presence of her family in Steamboat Springs Colorado. She was the daughter of the late Julius Buford (Slim) Bridges and Annie Mae Butler Bridges. She was born in Greenville, SC and grew up attending Emmanuel Baptist Church, Mills Mill in Greenville and joined Temple Baptist Church after moving to Simpsonville in 1941. She retired as secretary for Clear Spring Baptist Church, Simpsonville.

She graduated from Simpsonville High School, attended Draughon’s Business College in SC and Westmoreland Community College in PA. She has faith and friends in Pennsylvania where she lived for many years before returning to South Carolina in 1986.

Surviving are her son Dr. W. John Smith II and his wife, Janet, of Chesterfield MO; daughter M. Jane Smith and her husband, Jeff Barnes, of Loveland CO; son Jack C. Smith and his wife, Kim, of Steamboat Springs CO; and 5 grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Wm Russell Bridges of Anderson SC, Martin Bridges of Simpsonville SC, and Clyde Bridges of Greer SC; and two sisters, Betty Lou Landers and Patsy Barbrey of Simpsonville. She was preceded in death by her brother Johnny “Rock” Bridges of Simpsonville.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Temple Baptist Church in Simpsonville starting at 9:30 AM. A funeral service conducted by Pastor Brett Aiken will follow starting at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Cannon Memorial Park.
