Mary Elizabeth “Sophie” Maxwell

Mary Elizabeth “Sophie” Maxwell, age 79, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on February 21, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Reuben Henry and Helen Catherine Spiegler Gocker. Mrs. Maxwell was retired from MCI Communications and was a life-long Methodist. She loved reading, her pets, the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Braves.

“I want to be remembered as a mother who always and completely loved her children and always tried to do what was best for them,” Mrs. Maxwell once wrote.

Mrs. Maxwell is survived by two sons, Scott Maxwell and wife Linda, and Kent Maxwell and wife Theresa; a daughter, Holly Baltz and husband Robert; seven grandchildren, Brittany Sampson, Kelly Maxwell, Tyler Maxwell, Zack Maxwell, Brooke Maxwell, Max Baltz, and Mae Baltz; a great granddaughter, Abigail Sampson; and a sister, Ruth Woodke.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Cannon Funeral Home, 1150 North Main Street, Fountain Inn, SC 29644.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Literacy Association, 225 South Pleasantburg Drive, Suite C10, Greenville, SC 29607.
